Smriti Bharti

Smriti Bharti (b.1993, Unnao, India), is a visual artist based in Oslo working across textiles, installation, and spatial practice. Through her work, she explores how the material and making-choices behind the spaces we inhabit and objects we use, shape our relationships with them. Smriti holds a Master's degree in Interior Architecture and Furniture Design from the Oslo National Academy of the Arts, a Master's degree in Textile Design from the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad, India, and a Bachelor’s degree in Textile Design from the National Institute of Fashion Technology, Mumbai, India.

In Smriti’s interdisciplinary practice, her work is driven by material enquiry and hands-on exploration. Her aesthetic sensibilities are rooted in appreciation for crafts, natural materials and the expressive qualities of the handmade. Drawing on the textility of interlacement, layering, tension, softness, rhythm, and repetition, she explores how textile processes can inform spatial and architectural thinking. Through this approach, she investigates the relationships between structure and surface, body and space, and the tactile and sensory qualities of the built environment.

Her practice encompasses both textile and non-textile processes, including weaving, felting, printing, dyeing, woodworking, and experimental approaches to material transformation. She is particularly interested in how processes of transformation and care can reveal new values and meanings within reclaimed, overlooked, naturally occurring materials and everyday matter.

Alongside her artistic practice, Smriti's interest in foraging informs her approach to material exploration and place-based making. Observing, collecting, and working with materials found within local landscapes allows her to develop a deeper understanding of ecological relationships, seasonal cycles, and regional material cultures. This sensitivity to context is reflected in her work's emphasis on locality and craftsmanship.

Through art and spatial interventions, Smriti seeks to create experiences that invite reflection on our connections to materials, making, maker and the environment we inhabit.
